This is part four of a series of posts that explains how to built a blog, using Joomla! and K2.

Configuring the modules

We're going to use the modules that were installed alongside K2. If you don't remind installing them, that's perfectly normal. I didn't realize this the first time around, either.

Let's start out by creating the "Categories" module, which will allow users to navigate to a category of their choice. You can either create a new module, copy existing modules or edit an existing module. We're going to say "Use the X module" . Feel free to copy / create / edit as you see fit!

Categories

Use the "K2 Tools" module. Name it "Categories" and place it in a module position of your choice.

Under "Select module functionality", choose either one of these options:

  • Category Select box (will show dropdown menu)
  • Categories list (Menu)

For either option, go to the configuration part and set "root category" to your 'Master category'. Enable the module, and save.

Most Read

  • Use the "K2 Content" module. Name it "Most Read" and place it in a module position of your choice.
  • Under "Source" select "Retrieve items from Categories".
  • Under "Retrieve items from Categories" use the following settings:
  • Select one or more categories: Set to "All"
  • Fetch items from children categories: Yes
  • Item count: configure as you like.
  • Item ordering: Most popular
  • Featured items: Yes
  • Time range (if ordering is set to 'most popular' or 'most commented'): Choose a time range of your liking. I'd suggest choosing something like a month.
  • Fetch only items with videos: No

Under "Item View options" set everything to "No", except "Title". Do the same for "Other Options."

Latest posts

Use the "K2 Content" module. Name it "Latest Posts" and place it in a module position of your choice.

Under "Source" select "Retrieve items from Categories".

Under "Retrieve items from Categories" use the following settings:

  • Select one or more categories: Set to "All"
  • Fetch items from children categories: Yes
  • Item count: configure as you like.
  • Item ordering: Default
  • Featured items: Yes
  • Time range (if ordering is set to 'most popular' or 'most commented'): Choose a time range of your liking. I'd suggest choosing something like a month.
  • Fetch only items with videos: No

Under "Item View options" set everything to "No", except "Title". Do the same for "Other Options."

Tag Cloud

Use the "K2 Tools" module. Name it "Tag Cloud" and place it in a module position of your choice.

Under "Select module functionality", select "Tag Cloud"

Leave the settings under "Tag Cloud" as is. That way, tags will be displayed for each category.
